Highlights
Dotonbori & Namba
Arrive at Kansai International Airport
Take the Nankai Rapi:t express to Namba Station (¥1,450, 38 min) or the cheaper Nankai Airport Express (¥930, 45 min). Both drop you in the heart of Osaka.
¥930Check into hostel in Namba
The Namba/Shinsaibashi area is the best base — walking distance to everything. Try The Dorm Hostel Osaka or J-Hoppers Osaka. Dorm beds from ¥2,500/night.
¥2,500Kuromon Market (Kitchen of Osaka)
Covered market with 150+ stalls. Try fresh sashimi on a stick (¥300-500), grilled king crab legs (¥1,000), and creamy uni. Eat standing like a local.
¥1,500Shinsaibashi-suji Shopping Street
600-meter covered arcade with shops for every budget. Great for window shopping, free air conditioning, and people-watching. Duck into side streets for vintage finds.
Hozenji Yokocho alley
Atmospheric narrow stone lane behind Dotonbori with a moss-covered Buddha statue. Splash water on the statue for good luck. Then find a tiny standing bar for a ¥300 beer.
¥300Dotonbori at dusk
The neon-lit canal street is Osaka's most iconic view — Glico Running Man, giant crab signs, and LED madness. Cross the Ebisu Bridge for the classic photo angle.
Street food crawl on Dotonbori
This is what Osaka is famous for. Must-try: takoyaki at Wanaka (¥500), okonomiyaki at Mizuno (¥800), kushikatsu at Daruma (¥100/stick), and gyoza at Chao Chao (¥400). Eat until you drop.
¥2,000Osaka Castle, Shinsekai & Tennoji
Osaka Castle
One of Japan's most famous landmarks. The castle grounds are free — the park is huge with moats and cherry trees. Enter the castle museum (¥600) for panoramic views from the 8th floor.
¥600Osaka Castle Park picnic
Grab an onigiri and a drink from a konbini and sit by the moat. The park has 600 cherry trees (stunning in spring) and is free year-round.
¥400Lunch at Shinsekai (kushikatsu alley)
Walk to the retro Shinsekai district — it looks like 1960s Japan with the Tsutenkaku Tower as the centerpiece. Eat kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers) at Yaekatsu — sticks from ¥100 each. Rule: never double-dip in the communal sauce.
¥1,000Tsutenkaku Tower
Osaka's Eiffel Tower (103m). ¥900 for the observation deck with city views. Touch Billiken's feet for good luck — he's the grinning god of happiness at the top.
¥900Tennoji Park & Abeno Harukas
Walk through Tennoji Park (free) or splurge on Abeno Harukas — Japan's tallest building at 300m with an observation deck (¥1,500). On clear days you can see Kobe and Nara.
¥1,500Dinner at a local okonomiyaki spot
Find a neighborhood okonomiyaki restaurant (not the tourist ones in Dotonbori). Sit at the teppan counter and watch the chef make your Osaka-style pancake. ¥800-1,200 for a loaded one.
¥1,000Night walk through Amerikamura
Osaka's youth culture district (like Tokyo's Harajuku). Street art, vinyl shops, and cheap bars. Triangle Park is the social hangout spot. Good for late-night people-watching.

Day Trip to Nara
Train to Nara
Take the Kintetsu Nara Line from Osaka-Namba (¥680, 40 min). Faster and cheaper than JR. Nara is compact — everything is walkable from the station.
¥680Nara Park & deer
1,200 wild deer roam freely in the park. Buy shika-senbei (deer crackers, ¥200) and they'll literally bow to you before eating. Watch your belongings — they also eat maps and tickets.
¥200Todai-ji Temple (Great Buddha)
The world's largest wooden building houses a 15-meter bronze Buddha from 752 AD. ¥600 entry. Try squeezing through the pillar hole at the back — legend says it grants enlightenment.
¥600Lunch at Naramachi (old town)
Walk through the preserved merchant district. Try kakinoha-zushi (sushi wrapped in persimmon leaves) — a Nara specialty. Small restaurants on side streets serve lunch sets from ¥800.
¥1,000Kasuga-taisha Shrine
Shinto shrine famous for thousands of stone and bronze lanterns. The surrounding forest path is magical. ¥500 for the inner sanctuary (worth it). Free for the outer grounds.
¥500Yoshikien Garden
Free entry for foreign visitors (bring your passport). Three styles of Japanese garden in one. Much quieter than the famous Isuien next door (¥1,200). A hidden budget gem.
Return to Osaka
Train back to Namba (¥680). Drop bags at the hostel and head out for a final night.
¥680Farewell dinner at Dotonbori
One more round of Osaka street food. Try anything you missed on day 1 — negiyaki (green onion pancake), ikayaki (grilled squid), and finish with a taiyaki (fish-shaped pastry) for dessert.
¥1,500Travel Tips
- Osaka is Japan's street food capital — plan to eat 4-5 small meals a day instead of 3 big ones
- Get an ICOCA IC card at Kansai Airport — it works exactly like Tokyo's Suica on all trains and buses
- Dotonbori is best at night when the neon signs are on — save your first visit for dusk
- Osaka people are famously friendly and funny — don't be surprised if strangers chat you up
- Nara is easily doable as a half-day trip — go early to beat the school group crowds at Todai-ji
- Never double-dip your kushikatsu — use the spoon to pour communal sauce onto your plate instead
- Konbini onigiri and cold brew coffee make the cheapest breakfast in Japan (¥300 total)
